House plants have made their way into almost every room in the home, and bathroom plants is a trend that is most definitely here to stay, as they are a great way to spruce up your space if you are stuck for bathroom ideas. Not only does a plant-filled bathroom help create a sanctuary of relaxation at the end of a long day, if you care for them right, but they will also reward you with a range of health benefits.
Before you rush to the garden centre, it is important to make sure that your bathroom is the best home for your new plant; they need to be humid-loving and able to thrive in darker spaces to enable them to live their best lives. So, how do you find the best plants for the bathroom? Well, look no further, see our top 10 bathroom plants below…
1. spider plant
Spider plants are your best friend when it comes to houseplants. They can thrive just about anywhere in your home and are tolerant of many different conditions, in fact we have a few Spider Plants happily living at the VADO office too!
Although Spider Plants prefer a brighter space, they are also perfectly happy in darker rooms and love a humid environment – which makes them the perfect shower accessory! They are also becoming increasingly popular for their health benefits, they are especially good at absorbing nasty air pollutants that are common around the home, leaving you with only the best air quality. We told you they are your new best friend!
3. Orchid
An Orchid is a perfect bathroom plant that will give your space a luxury spa feeling, and with its elegant aesthetic it will really brighten up the room. Orchids like natural light, therefore, they make a beautiful living ornament on a windowsill. Also, because they are happy in compact pots, they will not take up too much room, leaving space for your beloved beauty products!
An Orchid will feel right at home in a bathroom, as these conditions reflect its natural environment. However, make sure you keep the room well ventilated to help protect your Orchid from mould caused by too much moisture.
4. aloe vera
Similarly, to the Peace Lily, Aloe Vera plants are low maintenance and do not need much watering as they are able to retain a lot, therefore the daily humidity from using your bathroom is enough to keep your Aloe plant going. Aloe Vera plants are also perfect for small bathrooms where light is limited, as lots of sunlight can in fact burn their leaves, so they are much happier in darker rooms.
Succulents are a firm favourite of ours as they are small enough to be able to sit alongside a basin without being obstructive, they also complement the brassware perfectly no matter the colour.
At VADO we love to pair them with our Edit Mono Basin Mixer from our Individual by VADO range in Brushed Black, for a bold statement look.
6. Dragon Plant
A Dragon Plant is perfect for those who are struggling for space in their bathroom as they stay thin, tall, and slender which means they can fit into small, narrow gaps. The Dragon plant also benefits from bright, indirect light therefore obscured bathroom windows are perfect for this plant’s happiness.
Dragon Plants do not welcome over-watering, in-fact they prefer under-watering so the humidity from your bathroom and little watering would be more than enough for this houseplant.
7. snake plant
The Snake Plant, also known as mother-in-law’s tongue, is another which is beloved by both beginners and plant pros alike because of its invincibility to withstand almost any growing condition. They need little to no watering, therefore if kept in your bathroom you can leave it to do its own thing. Snake Plants can also grow in many light conditions, which makes it one of the best bathroom plants as it can be loved by all, those with bright light, little light, or absolutely no light at all!
8. Air plant
These houseplants can easily fool you by their name, however, they need a lot more than just air. In fact, they need loads of watering to the point where it is recommended to use a ‘soaking’ method at least once a week. This may seem high maintenance, but nothing is stopping you from hanging these in the shower to ensure they are getting enough water – talk about multi-tasking!
Air Plants are extremely versatile when it comes to what you put them in, they are not fussy creatures. Our favourite look would be to display them in small, coloured pots along one of our Omika geometric shelves or popping them in a hanging basket from the ceiling. Other options include using wall suction cups to stick them in your shower, or even pinning them to wall hooks! How ever you decide to display your Air Plant, just make sure they have plenty of indirect light to keep them thriving.
9. HEART LEAF PHILODENDRON
The Heart Leaf Philodendron is an indoor house plant which thrives in humidity, therefore the more humid its environment the bigger it gets, which ultimately makes it the perfect bathroom plant. This philodendron is also a trailing plant making it a great addition for adding lots of greenery to your bathroom décor. At VADO we love to style trailing plants at height to allow them to freely drape down the tiles alongside a mirror, after all who doesn’t love being surrounded by a bit of nature when brushing their teeth in the morning!
